Moving day
We have a very enjoyable morning being tourists in Lyme, including selfies on the Cobb and a very interesting visit to the museum. Lyme used to be quite an important port. It was where the Duke of Monmouth landed for his ill-fated attempt to seize the throne. Many men from Lyme were killed at Sedgemore or were executed in the Bloody Assizes
On The Cobb
.
We fancy
crab sandwiches.
“If you are
planning to eat them outside, watch out for seagulls,” warns the man in the
bakery.
We sit on
the beach. I am halfway through my
second half sandwich when there is a sudden flapping of wings and a sharp nip to
my finger. The rest of the sandwich is
gone. To make matters worse I realise
that I have been sitting on chewing gum.
Who do I
hate most – the seagull or the tow-rag who left their gum on the beach? Answers on a post-card.
So, on to
Weymouth, where we have reserved an Airbnb.
It starts to go pear-shaped when we turn into Lennox Street.
“I don’t
like this. It’s a rough area”, Chris
says.
We find the
AirBnb and unload. I drive off to the
long stay car park by the station.
When I get
back, this:
“Did you get
my text”
“No, what?”
“We are not
staying here. There are bed bugs”.
I examine
the bed. OK, so have you contacted them?”
“ Yes, Laura
is coming over. “
We quickly
book into the Jubilee Hotel. I head back
to fetch the car. I do not take part in
the discussion with Laura, who, of course, disagrees.
The Jubilee
turns out to be at the end of the street.
We confirm our reservation and get our car parked. Chris calls the hotel “chavvy” but the room
is OK and has a view of the sea.
However, I have had to shell out £700, and there is no chance of a
refund from the AirBnb. Actually, we are
well out of it. It was really cramped
and not very clean either, bugs or no bugs.
We book into
a fish restaurant on the harbour, thinking it’s going to be cheap and
cheerful. Actually, we are in ‘Catch on
the Harbour’, one of the best restaurants in Dorset. It’s a seven-course tasting menu. Marvellous,
but £220 for two. One day I will tot up
the cost of our SWCP project – or on the other hand, maybe not.
